Atletico Madrid have revived their interest in Manchester United star Ander Herrera and the midfielder is keen to link up with Diego Simeone, according to reports.
The Spaniard is out of contract next summer and can begin negotiating with foreign clubs over a Bosman move in January, with talks over a new deal at Old Trafford proving unfruitful so far.
And according to Spanish outlet AS, Atletico believe they can convince Herrera to return to Spain and an agreement is nearly close.
Both Simeone and Herrera are keen for a deal to happen, with the Argentine coach convinced he is exactly what Atletico are missing in midfield at the moment.
Despite being named United’s Player of the Season for the campaign just finished, Herrera found himself on the bench at the start of the latest season.
Jose Mourinho has favoured a midfield pairing of summer signing Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba, with only the latter’s injury giving Herrera an opportunity to return to the first team.
That has encouraged Atletico to ramp up their efforts to persuade Herrera to sign and they are keen to try and rush through a deal while he is on the periphery of Mourinho’s first-team plans.
Atletico’s interest in Herrera is not a new development, with the midfielder having been muted as a potential target a year ago.
He had been somewhat unhappy under Louis van Gaal’s management, but Mourinho’s arrival saw him turn into a key player and the manager’s on-pitch lieutenant.
United, however, are keen to keep Herrera at the club and, even if they cannot persuade him, have one last card to play: an automatic renewal clause they can activate to add an additional year to his contract.
