Ashley Young says he would rather be playing in a more advanced role for Manchester United, having been used as a full-back by Jose Mourinho this season.
The 32-year-old has frequently lined up at left-back – or left wing-back – for United this season, notably in games against both Tottenham and Chelsea.
However, Young – who received a somewhat surprising call up back to the England squad – would rather be playing in his usual winger position, though insists he does not mind playing deeper.
‘I would prefer it if I was playing further up the pitch,’ Young told reporters.
‘But I’ve been able to adapt and play as a left-back or a right-back and as a wing-back.
‘I’m one of those players who can read the game well. And I have now got that experience as well to be clever, knowing where to be, when to attack, when to defend.
‘It’s proved quite easy to adjust and I feel like I have done that really well.’
England take on Germany and Brazil in two high-profile friendlies over the international break, with manager Gareth Southgate believed to be ready to give in to Young’s wish and play him further forward.
