Chelsea sold the midfielder for £40m in August, which saw him reunited with former boss Mourinho.
The pair worked together at Stamford Bridge with Matic a key figure in the Portuguese’s team.
And the experienced Serbia international has proved a shrewd signing this year too.
Matic, who penned a three-year deal, has settled quickly at Old Trafford, leaving many questioning why Chelsea let him go.
Antonio Conte replaced him with Tiemoue Bakayoko but he has struggled since joining from Monaco.
It has been claimed Matic pushed hard for the transfer to United and even stopped training with Chelsea before being left behind from their pre-season tour of the US.
But the key to the deal happening, despite United and Chelea’s rivalry, was a trusted agent’s involvement.
On Matic joining him in Manchester, Mourinho told Sky Sports: “I was surprised, I was surprised when his agent called me to say: ‘Do you want him?’
“I was surprised. But he’s an agent that I know well and normally he’s very direct, very objective.
“When he told me: ‘You can have him if you want’, of course I wanted”
“He doesn’t lose time, he doesn’t drive people to be interested in his players to improve the player’s situation in his club.
“Normally he’s really straightforward and that.
“So when he told me: ‘You can have him if you want’, of course I wanted.”
Matic is expected to start on his first return to west London on Sunday when Manchester United face Chelsea in their crunch Premier League showdown (4.30pm).
