Manchester United clocked up their seventh win from 10 Premier League games with a narrow 1-0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.
The Red Devils did so courtesy of Anthony Martial’s late winner, with the France international coming off the bench to devastating effect.
However, fans before the game flocked to social media to vent their fury with what they considered to be a defensive formation.
Mourinho went with a back three of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, with two anchormen in Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.
And Crooks has accused the Manchester United boss of being ‘frightened’ when picking his side.
“Why playing Rashford, Martial and Lukaku in a three-man attack at Old Trafford should frighten Mourinho is a mystery to me,” Crooks said in his BBC team of the week column.
“And he calls himself the ‘Special One’
“With Romelu Lukaku slightly off the pace and Marcus Rashford with a mandate to score within 70 minutes or he’s off, it was left to [Antonio] Valencia to marshal his defence well enough not to give Tottenham a sniff of their goal and that’s precisely what he did.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was also surprised by the formation Mourinho opted to deploy.
“Just looking out the window at Tottenham it looks like they are going to go to a back three and I think that might throw Jose a little,” he said.
“This is not a Mourinho system, he has always been 4-3-3, so playing three at the back does change things.
“I am not sure they will be that comfortable. I think it is a bit of a surprise to have a back three.”
United are next in action against Benfica in the Champions League tomorrow (7.45pm).
