Mourinho was jeered in Manchester United’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.
Many fans were stunned by his decision to take off Marcus Rashford win 20 minutes to go, with Anthony Martial coming on in his place.
However, the 54-year-old’s tactical tinkering was vindicated with Martial going on to score the winner, coolly slotting past Hugo Lloris.
Mourinho can be known for being a prickly character but the Manchester United manager insists he does not care a jot if fans vent their fury at him.
“They pay the ticket, they can do what they want,” Mourinho said.
“They can boo a player that doesn’t deserve to be booed, they can boo a player that is working like an animal, and because the game is not going in his direction, they can boo.
“They paid their ticket, they can do what they want, they can boo the manager, they can do what they want, there is no problem for me.”
Mourinho has, however, encouraged fans to show more respect to Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgium international was the one many supporters wanted hooked against Spurs instead of Rashford.
And Mourinho wants the former Everton hitman to be treated fairly.
“I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don’t support him so much because he gives everything,” he added.
“And I think it is not fair when scoring the goal or not scoring the goal makes the whole difference. I don’t think it is fair at all.
“So I’m a bit disappointed – but not with him. With him [I am] very pleased.”
