Manchester United lost more ground in the title race with a lacklustre performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho’s men slumped to a second Premier League defeat from three games with Alvaro Morata’s thunderbolt header enough to give Antonio Conte’s men all three points.
Manchester United again looked poor, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku both toiling.
And Spanish website Don Balon claims Mourinho used yesterday’s game to try and get wheels in motion over a potential deal for Fabregas.
The Spain international oozed class yesterday, pulling the strings in midfield and minimising the impact of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.
However, his future remains up in the air with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.
And Don Balon say Mourinho would love to make him United’s latest midfield lynchpin.
It is said he talked with the Spain international about a transfer after yesterday’s game.
However, Mourinho wants Fabregas for another reason on top of that.
The 54-year-old would love to deal a hammer blow to Antonio Conte, with the duo far from friends.
Even after the game the two managers did not shake hands, with Conte heading onto the pitch to celebrate.
Meanwhile, speaking last week, Fabregas praised Mourinho – the man who signed him for Chelsea back in the summer of 2014.
And he also shed light on how the United manager left Chelsea in December 2015.
“I love Jose and I consider him my friend and we still keep in touch right now,” he told Sky Sports.
“Some of the things said were unfortunate, but I have huge respect for him.
“I think Jose’s biggest problem was that he trusted us too much. He gave us more holiday because we were champions. He had been trusting us and we let him down.”
