Mourinho, who put a finger to his lips at the final whistle, was puzzled by the muffled boos which echoed around the ground when he substituted Marcus Rashford and replaced the striker with match-winner Martial.
And he had a dig at the United faithful when he said: “I really don’t understand some reactions. Why? Are they Red Devils? Some people speak too much.
“Calm down. Relax a little bit. Speak, speak, speak. Don’t be nervous. Relax. Don’t be too excited.”
It was clear the crowd were agitated over Mourinho’s decision on a day when United fans had a pop at the Londoners by chanting: “Have you ever seen Tottenham win the league?”
Martial made sure Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs side will have to battle hard to end those 56 years of hurt since their last title win with a goal from Romelu Lukaku’s flick on.
He then reminded Mourinho that he was not happy warming the bench.

That is the fourth goal he has scored as a sub and Martial said: “I want to play. I don’t want to be on the bench. But the manager gave me a chance and I had to score.
“The manager tells me to find space and I know Lukaku is good with his head. So I scored and I’m happy.”
The Manchester United boss was delighted with his contribution and added: “He came on and okay, it wasn’t a clean shot but the movement was good.
“The ball is obviously in and gives us two more points than we would have had if it wasn’t.”
