Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea and are closing in a move for Athletic Bilbao stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Los Blancos have a long-held interest in De Gea and failed in a deadline day bid to sign the 27-year-old in 2015 after failing to complete the necessary paperwork on the transfer.

De Gea has 18 months left on his existing deal at Old Trafford and though he’s happy with the Red Devils it’s no secret that he would like to move back to his hometown.

The Spaniard’s kept eight clean sheets in 11 Premier League games this term but Real Madrid appear to have moved on and are close to  a deal for Arrizabalaga.

According to COPE, Bilbao want to insert a £70m release clause in Arrizabalaga’s contract but he is refusing and wants to move to the Bernabeu in January.

Keylor Navas’ form has concerned Zinedine Zidane this season and it’s likely to be the Costa Rican’s last campaign in the Spanish capital.

United would ideally like to tie De Gea down to a new contract but he’s likely to wait to see how Madrid’s plans develop before committing himself to further years at Old Trafford.
