Anthony Martial is not playing to his potential at Manchester United, Gary Neville has claimed.

The striker came off the bench at the weekend to score the winning goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham.

The goal highlighted the talent the young French forward possesses, but Red Devils legend Neville believes Martial doesn’t display it as consistently as he should. Neville even speculated there could be something wrong with the 21-year-old.

‘It’s been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘For someone of that talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He’s lost his place in the France squad. There’s obviously something wrong with him.

‘Mourinho and the French manager [Didier Deschamps] have turned off of him a little bit. You always get the feeling he’s playing at 85 per cent.

‘If he showed that extra 15 per cent, then he could do anything. He’s got everything you’d want: composure in front of goal, great skill, pace, strength, but what is that little bit missing?’

Martial has been in the best form of his Manchester United career this season, with his strike against Tottenham his sixth goal of the season in all competitions.

However frustratingly for the former Monaco player, his four goals in the Premier League have all come off the bench – earning him a reputation as a ‘super-sub’.

Neville added: ‘He takes big moments on and obviously has the temperament to play in big games. But come on, let’s see it every single week.

‘He could be a player that could score 20 goals in 20 games if he really wanted to and strived to be the best.’
