Jose Mourinho had doubts over Victor Lindelof due to the defender’s slow start at Manchester United, according to reports.
The 23-year-old is yet to start a Premier League game this season and has mainly been used in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup.
Manchester Evening News reports that Mourinho was ‘concerned’ by Lindelof’s performances in pre-season, which prompted the United manager to stick with Eric Bailly and Phil Jones as his centre-back partnership in the Premier League.
The report also claims that the United manager has been reassured by his contacts in Portugal that Lindelof’s slow start is similar to how he first settled in at Benfica.
Lindelof was signed from Benfica for £31 million this summer but has so far failed to secure a regular role at United.
The Sweden international was also under further pressure after the 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town last Saturday as his mistake directly led to a goal.
Lindelof started in the 2-0 win over Swansea City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening but after the game, Mourinho admitted that he changed formation to help the Swede.
‘I decided to play with three [at the back] because Victor was not coming with his confidence levels very, very high, so I decided to play both with the experience of Smalling and we were ok,’ said the United manager.
‘It was good for the players to get confidence.’
