That is according to ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno.
The Swedish star arrived at Old Trafford this summer in a £31m move from Benfica.
The 23-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match for United and was at fault for Huddersfield’s second goal in the 2-1 loss on Saturday.
Mourinho is known for being ruthless when it comes to axing failing stars.
And Moreno has warned Lindelof he will continue to sit on the bench if he doesn’t improve soon.
“Here’s the problem, when you make these mistakes, what ends up happening is Jose Mourinho loses trust in what you can do,” the former Venezuela international said on ESPN FC.
“Whatever Jose Mourinho comes out and says in public is one thing, but as a manager if you see mistake after mistake, you lose that trust”
“Whatever Jose Mourinho comes out and says in public is one thing, but as a manager if you see mistake after mistake, you lose that trust.
“If you lose that trust, what happens is you are going to end up sitting right next to me on the bench.
“Get comfortable, because you’re not going to go play.”
But Moreno admits a lack of game time is likely to affect Lindelof’s ability in the long-run.
“So how do you get confidence if you’re not getting repetition?” he added.
“How do you get confidence if you’re not putting in good performance after good performance?
“The more you sit on that bench, the more anxious you become and when you get that opportunity to play, that one image you have or the memories that you have is what you did before.
“What you did before was fail for Manchester United.
“The moment you make another mistake, all of those things come right back up and then that pressure ramps up.”
Lindelof may get the chance to atone for his error last weekend when the Red Devils take on Spurs on Saturday.
