Manchester United were linked with a move for Alba over the summer, with the Spain international struggling under Luis Enrique at Barcelona last season.
However, Ernesto Valverde’s side were able to cling onto the 29-year-old despite Jose Mourinho’s best efforts to bring him to Old Trafford.
But, despite Alba going on to stay with Barcelona, Spanish website Don Balon claims Alba remains on United’s radar.
And, in news sure to stun Barca supporters, Mourinho is supposedly confident of snapping up the defender in the New Year.
United’s left-back woes are well-documented.
Despite having the backing of the fans, Luke Shaw continues to toil and the chances of him ever endearing himself to Mourinho appear remote.
The Red Devils have often deployed Daley Blind and Ashley Young at the back but left-back is neither player’s natural position.
Don Balon say United’s search has led them to Alba.
And, with Lucas Digne finally impressing for Barcelona, Mourinho is confident he can land his man.
The 54-year-old has asked the United board to get to work on signing the Spain international.
Barcelona could also be willing to do business with the club lining up Bayer Leverkusen’s Wendell.
Scouts from the La Liga giants were spotted watching Leverkusen earlier this month and, should Wendell arrive, that could pave the way for Alba to move to the Premier League.
