The Red Devils take on Tottenham at Old Trafford in tomorrow’s lunch-time kick off, with the two clubs level on points.
And Sherwood believes Mourinho needs to start trusting his players to attack against the big clubs, rather than parking the bus.
The former Spurs manager reckons Mourinho risks losing the title to cross-town rivals City.
Sherwood told Betsafe: “United can’t afford to sit back any more. With Man City being as good as they are, how many points can you afford to drop?
“It’s a real tough decision to go to Anfield and play for a point, sends a message to the players that you don’t think they are good enough.
“I think Jose, with the players that he has needs to trust in his players a bit more.
“If Pochettino had that squad of players he would want them to go out and win every game.
“It can breath negativity in the dressing room as the boys will talk to each other and ask if the manager doesn’t think they are good enough.
“If United go toe to toe with Spurs then it’ll be a great game. I really believe the way City are playing they can’t afford to drop any points.”
